Unlocking Creativity: The Magic of Freehand Drawing

It’s Sunday evening and I’ve had a glorious weekend of clients in the studio, as I was working on

my final piece today amongst the wonderful chats that took place, I realised why I personally enjoy working in freehand as much as possible when it comes to tattooing these days.

It’s because it feels like it truly unlocks creativity in the best way, I’m reminded again that the process, the journey, is so important.. It’s completely bespoke to the wonderful new owner, working with their individually ‘perfect’ body, curving with their curves and flowing with their shapes, and it just feels so intuitive to me now. There was a time I’d be filled with anxiety to make a ‘live’ change to a stencil we’d applied and were about to begin tattooing, but I believe I have truly found my people now and I thrive in this setting. The pen flows in the same organic way the flowers do, when I’m creating an installation or dreamscape under glass, wildly, untidily but with elegance and grace. The drawing is far from ‘perfect’, but my clients have been led here on purpose, and they are filled with absolute trust and excitement and so much patience in the process, knowing that this moment is just the beginning.

Tweaks are made and constant refinements when we begin, once the sketch has been okayed, details are added in every sense throughout the process and the piece fills out to its most wholesome form, adding layers and lines and shades wherever my intuition leads me, fully unrestricted from the harsh lines and pressures of a pre drawn and applied stencil, evolving to a finished piece that is new to us both, yet somehow always meant to be exactly as it is. I am so grateful of this way of working 🤍

This is one session of 4 hours including the drawing time and we have SO much mor to add, refine, create and colour and I truly can’t wait to continue that process!

(By the way, no shade to the insanely talented artists who DO use stencils, there is soooo much tattoo work out there that absolutely blows my mind, this is just my thoughts based on me ☺️)

If you’re interested in beginning your own piece of work, feel free to contact me to discuss ideas!
